Introduction

Set on a narrow infill plot in central Tokyo, this residence had to solve a familiar tension in dense urban housing: how to bring in daylight without exposing the home to its immediate neighbors.

The Designs

Rather than opening to the street, the house turns inward around a central courtyard, drawing light through the section instead of the perimeter. Concrete, timber, and paper screening layer together to hold privacy and openness at once.

Conclusion

From the street, the house gives almost nothing away. Inside, every principal room opens onto the courtyard, turning a tight urban footprint into a home that feels unexpectedly open.
